I have always felt this song has to do with Billy's sexuality. He was a closeted gay man who grew up in a religious family and grew up performing in church. I think the song is his way of saying "I'm gay and it's OK because God made me this way - He doesn't make mistakes." The mixture of religious fervor and secular romantic passion really is powerful - For love is the way. |
