Essentially, this song's biggest meaning is hidden under the literal lover being jealous story. The biggest most perfect lover is Jesus Christ and his Bride is Christianity. Talmudic Judaism is always trying to steal His lover, and this really pisses God off. The Killers did make Mr. Brightside in this same theme: God is jealous and will return soon to kick some ass. A great artist rarely explains everything that he conveys in his art. Tom Petty even has said he hates being “read that easily.” Learning To Fly is no exception. The song has multiple meanings, IMO, that don’t contradict each other. The deepest meaning that I think Petty was trying to convey is the Incarnation of Jesus and the journey though life as a Christian.
The video is a great help in deciphering meaning. It started out in a dessert, the Holy Land. The five cars represent the Torah, it’s five books. If the little boy represents the Jews who became followers of Christ then his parents are the Jews who pulled him away from the “sun came down,” Son came down.
As they leave the dessert, do you see the big J marked in the sand?
The little boy (Christianity) grows up, is tempted, struggles with life and love, but carries on, finds his woman. Learning to fly is learning how to be good, practicing what we preach. Being good and practicing love is “flying”. Sin and hate is “coming down,” and that is the hardest thing.
Tom was such a mystical artist he even foresaw the UFO crap that will try to distract us soon. Don’t fall for it. |

Recently, Paul told a story from way back that an irate Holocaust survivor phoned him when they had a banner up promoting the album. The banner was “Hey Jude.” The Jewish man thought Paul was referencing Jews, as in Juden. Now Paul calmed the man down and said it had nothing to do with Jews. This is double agent Kabbalism at its finest, IMO. What a great and tricky way to let us all know that it WAS written as a love song to the Jews. |

I don’t hate Jews either. In trying to understand a complicated issue, we can make mistakes by broad strokes.
Sure, I am not exact on the morgue characters, but I’m positive I’m on the right track.
Talmudic Judaism is very complicated. History is complicated. I believe 99% of folks, whether Jew, Catholic, Moslem, etc, don’t really question much or think that the age old religious arguments goes on. |

IMO, Mary Jane is Talmudic Judaism. She grew up in Hebron, (Hebron in Israel, not Indiana, but Tom is funny!) moved down here to Jerusalem, left the other tribes behind (boys) and where she met Jesus, but she moved on (Rejected the Messiah).
