Aesop Rock – The Gates Lyrics 3 years ago
The Gates. The introduction, The beginning, The Entrance to the theme park that is the Spirit world Field Guide. It's no mistake this is the first track aside from the introduction. Meant to set the tone of mysticism and exploration, the gearing up, the first steps.

my favorite passage:
"My dream home has like ten thousand deadbolts and less than no windows
I mean, shit"
Relates to me so much, especially when I'm out trying to make my own way through the world. The first steps of a journey are so difficult, making you want to just shut yourself in a hole just so you can finally breathe easy. But the journey is necessary, and we make it anyway.

Aesop Rock – Attaboy Lyrics 3 years ago
This track is a bit of self description, and maybe a bit of ego stroking following self deprecation for Aesop. He tells us how he lives and makes his way through the world in a way that only he can.

Aesop Rock – Pizza Alley Lyrics 3 years ago
This song is a "gonzo" like detailing of his experience during his trip to Puru. Talking of the people he met like:
"Electric eels killed two of my best friends"
Said the local to the gringo"
or
"The strays in the plaza look happier than my neighbors"

And also there's the imagery of "tarantula toupee" where tarantulas can sometimes jump or fall off of trees onto the heads of passerby. He may have experienced this in his trip, or just heard of it.

Overall I take this song as a sort of ayhuasca trip in a strange land, with mystical imagery applied to the mundane of the wilderness. Aes wants us to see this as a journey of the spirit. Although, I still can't make out the meaning of the song's title. Could be a personal experience or story associated.

Aesop Rock – Blood Sandwich Lyrics 3 years ago
This song is one of the more straightforward of Aesop's tracks, detailing memorable moments of his family, namely his bothers. The songs title "Blood Sandwich" refers to his Older brother, younger brother, and himself as the middle child, completing this "sandwich" of "blood" relation.
