The Traveling Wilburys – Tweeter And The Monkey Man Lyrics 3 years ago
@[Ricortiz:43368] According to George Harrison it was Bob and Tom. He said they were hold up in a corner giggling like school girls when they were writing it. He said it was that Americana shit which he didn't understand so he left them alone. I suspect it was mostly a Bob song with an assist from Tom or Tom would have sung alternate verses. Besides the rhythmic quality of the words is pure Bob Dylan. To me this seems somewhat of an homage to Bruce Springsteen as there are numerous allusion to Springsteen songs, especially from the "Greetings from Asbury Park NJ" and "Born to Run" albums. I'm sure they thought the connection between "Will-Bury" and As-Bury" was hilarious.

Dire Straits – Tunnel Of Love Lyrics 3 years ago
There is a gambling aspect to this song that acts as an extended metaphor; the "big wheel" is life, a Farris wheel, and a roulette table, layered on top of one another. It is also about love and chance. The phrase, lets keep it like this is an acknowledgement that the "high" is fleeting in terms of gambling - the win- and in love -being in love and the aspect of life that says if you hold onto something you will lose it, as it will become too familiar and the magic will fade and only the mundane is left. Few people write lyrics like poetry these days and we a lesser for the loss.
The music is phenomenal, as it starts out with the waltz from "Carousel" (Rogers an Hammerstein) and this foreshadows where this piece will go. Musically, with the many arpeggio phrases (an arpeggio, at least poetically speaking, never rest as it quickly moves on for to stay on a single note, no matter how wonderful quickly becomes boring and mundane) it exemplifies the idea of continually moving of the spot before it becomes pedagogic. It is as elusive as love and you cannot make a science out of love. As Wordsworth said, "we murder to dissect." So in a sense this might be a condemnation of the reductionist idea that currently permeates the culture, although I would suggest this was unconscious for Knopfler. Regardless this is a top rate song, both musically and lyrically.
