Probably one of the best renderings of a "ghost story" in rock history. But, more importantly, this song and part II were the last nod to the Genesis of the 1970's. This was their last art rock song. Everything that followed was, essentially, unlistenable. |

Phil tends to either get pissed off at or mourn the relationships in his life at the time. This is the former. Maybe not as emotionally raw as "I Don't Care Anymore" but it better melds the pop inclinations of 1980's Genesis with a subtle veneer their 1970's art rock. |

Catchy tune. Post-Gabriel Genesis at its best. 6/4 time signature. The lyrics are self-explanatory. Surprised that it did not catch on at pop and rock radio stations back in the early 80's. |

| Genesis – Me And Sarah Jane Lyrics

The song is a post-apocalyptic scenario where a survivor describes the crumbling civilization and the encroaching nuclear winter around him and, in his despair, invents an imaginary companion to accompany him as he succumbs to radiation sickness. In the end, he and "Sarah" drown themselves at a beach as the life becomes intolerable under these circumstances. The song is similar to "Wooden Ships" by Crosby Stills and Nash in terms of the overall theme but, perhaps, even more tragic. |
