Bruce Springsteen – My Beautiful Reward Lyrics 2 days ago
verse 2 is the continuation of verse 1, I think. He tried storing material riches and then in verse 2, there is a religious allusion but mainly he's saying he owned this big mansion yet didn't feel like he belonged. it's along with the rest of the songs on Lucky Town; he was going the wrong way till he found his family.

It's an amazing song; about a love of the childhood and days back in Harlan.
Her voice is the most elegant./

Bruce Springsteen – Book Of Dreams Lyrics 3 days ago
it's probably about his wedding. but can also be interpreted as a guy who watches his old love getting married to sb else and dreams about her being with himself instead.

Bruce Springsteen – Living Proof Lyrics 3 days ago
You shot through my anger and rage-
To show me my prison was just an open cage-
There were no keys, no guards-
Oh, just one frightened man and some old shadows for bars-
these lines are pure treasure. who else but he could put them so simple yet elegant, beautiful?

Gregory Alan Isakov – If I Go, I'm Goin Lyrics 7 days ago
It's more about loss; narrator lost someone in the house and now he's trying to move on.
In a coffee can-
Throw my nickels in-
Just in case I have to leave.
from the first time I heard this line, the image of loneliness came to my mind. He's stuck in his lonely everyday life in this house with so many memories of the past, holding him back, making him angry and later crazy; contemplating leaving.
Another meaning : the house is actually his own body. It is poetry after all so you can't take it word by word. This body is our prison [in the words of Rumi].

Amazing Song; God I love his voice.
Stones don't have a whole lotta "Road" songs; this is rare and beautiful.

Bruce Springsteen – My Father's House Lyrics 10 days ago
where our sins lie unatoned; all the bad things that happened in the past, almost feels like they were sins, you try and try to make them right but they won't be right and they stay ''unatoned''.

Bruce Springsteen – Used Cars Lyrics 11 days ago
one thing the Boss does in perfection is writing about these less-spoken aspects of everyday life [though he's not alone in doing that]. I have felt this type of embarrassments of the indignities in everyday life of middle-class; mostly embarrassed for my family, not because of them but the way the world make us look. he writes on how he wishes to escape from these little but sad feelings in life.

Bruce Springsteen – Mansion On the Hill Lyrics 15 days ago
Nebraska's an amazing album by the Boss. this one's about spending a lifetime looking and wondering how some people have it all and no matter how hard you work, you will never do.

Bob Dylan – Tangled Up in Blue Lyrics 19 days ago
the theory that the whole song is about one relationship is strong, but I kinda always felt each verse is a chapter from one (or perhaps more) of his relationships. It's possible that the only reference to the "redhead girl" is the one at the beginning; the rest are just different women. You know it kinda give the impression that it's written in a "flow of the conscious" sort, so he's just laying there and remembering events of his life; not in a very particular order: arthouse songwriting, if you will.

Bob Dylan – Meet Me in the Morning Lyrics 24 days ago
His word play is exquisite on this number. Notice how he mentions elements of the day; morning, dawn, sunrise and in the end sunset; so if you follow that he askes to meet in the morning, he goes there and hears the roosters, wait till sunset by she doesn't show and his heart keep sinking like the sun. Between rooster, hail and hound dogs; it's also a textbook blues song.

One of the greatest of the Greetings... along with "For you".
the ending; I think it could go either way: both of them died or the angel dies and the woman sitting by his body.

Neil Young – Out on the Weekend Lyrics 1 month ago
God I love it when he sings this mellow; not that I don't love your Cinnamon Girls & Like a Hurricane; they're great too.
about the song; just a thought: isn't the bridge (see the lonely boy...) what the woman says?
so he's in love, but he's down and not feeling that good (not related to love) but he's afraid that's gonna ruin everything and he can't express all this to the woman. He rather escapes. and still hope he's somewhere in her mind.
on the other hand, the woman already know all this and his feelings; that what he feels is even greater than joy. so all's gonna be good.

A real masterpiece. He opposes the war emphatically and its true masters; not the soldiers who are not there of their own volition.

Townes Van Zandt – Rex's Blues Lyrics 1 month ago
Seanmft comment is thorough.
It still can also be about addiction and how it's not the answer and he still tries to leave the darkness behind.
In any case, it's poetry at its most magnificent height; that's what Townes does.

The National – Guest Room Lyrics 1 month ago
the instrumental section at the end of this one is amazing.
it's obviously about a relationship nearing the end (as Matt said it somewhere) but that comment about judgement day doesn't sound so far fetched either; that's what good song writing does.

Mark Knopfler – A Place Where We Used to Live Lyrics 2 months ago
Great song. Reminiscing all the places we have been, places we visited regularly for a period in our life, then we go to another place and now we are visiting another place regularly. But what happens to those places. I kinda feel they're part of who we are, who we have become. they have our dreams, our worries, our sadness.

A great song; amazing really. I love how Emmylou sounds on her tracks on Desire; she does a great job accompanying the maestro and giving the songs a touch of country.
Bet Hurricane was even greater in the early version with Emmylou.

David Bowie – Dollar Days Lyrics 3 months ago
I've been listening to it since the day it came out and then we lost Bowie.
seems to be about how he started in music industry and how he tried to do things differently and how it required to "fool them". Oligarchs could be execs in the business.
"Honor stretching tails to necks"
this line... sometimes at work I get to thinking that I'm not really proud of what I all the things I do. They all do not sum up to define me as a character. Maybe I say something to somebody or do sth, still wouldn't be better if all these things were in line with the person I like to be, and weren't kinda demeaning?
Maybe Bowie is referring to all the things he had to do in this life and he wished they were better, more honorable but that's life and things just happen, a million of them.
anyway I'm probably wide off the mark

Bob Dylan – Blind Willie McTell Lyrics 3 months ago
one of his best, the sorrow in his voice spectacular. one thing about is that at first listen, you might not be taken by it as much, but the more listen the more it gets better.

Bob Dylan – Don't Fall Apart on Me Tonight Lyrics 5 months ago
Amazing song! stuff about palace of the pope and the millionaire are just fantastic.
How can he create masterpiece after masterpiece.
also ''house of stainless steel"; there are quite a number of these types of phrases on Dylan's songs, which I don't know why but they remind me of stories my grandpa used to say: you know the kind of storytelling and hyperbole reminiscent of the past times.

It's an amazing song from the Master. It's chilling how great he was on these love songs, it's like he only ever sang these ones!
the line "When I'm checking you out one day, to see if I'm
Faking it all" is beyond amazing; he went with the an exceptional choice of line here.

Nirvana – Pennyroyal Tea Lyrics 1 year ago
I think "sit and drink" signifies the fact that when you are depressed, you tend to isolate yourself, so he wants to just be by himself and try to "distill the life" or try to make things make sense to him; it's not therapeutic and only leads to more wallowing.
Anemic Royalty is play on words; opposite of "royal blood". Again sense of low self-esteem and self pity in depression.

The Rolling Stones – Sister Morphine Lyrics 1 year ago
I obviously think the song is about drugs too, but if the stones said none of them are and we want to go with that, I think I can make a case.
1. the song can be about drugs in a way Mother's Little Helper is, which is not about addiction to recreational drugs but using drugs to hold off the actual medical pain. I think there's a distinction.
2. what if sister morphine is actually a girl, and all this plea is a request for her love. Like a torch song for unrequited love.
I'm just saying we can keep an open mind, and we must when dealing with great music and poetry.

Townes Van Zandt – Nothin' Lyrics 1 year ago
It has a clear drug addiction reference, he's talking about being all the way down on drugs.
Also he's talking about the problems of the life itself, and how the troubles always come doublefold, when it rains it pours and all that.
And of course, the living itself, the whole race makes you think things you kinda have to, to get by. bowing down to your temptation, and after you've lost "mama", there remains sorrow and solitude.

sounds like he's complaining, in other songs he acknowledges all the burdens yet still hopeful. But it's an effort to stay hopeful, here he's really down.
Brilliant Legend.
