| Jackson Browne – Redneck Friend Lyrics | 7 months ago |
| When I first heard the song I was naive teenager enough to think it was about setting up a female friend with a male friend who was a little.. oafish and backward.. There is a school of thought that’s it’s about introducing a young lady to Gregg Allman… But IMO the rest of the commenters are right.. It’s about Jackson’s tallywhacker.. | |

I don't know what made me think of this song from the 90s, but I refreshed my memory on Doug Hopkins as a result.. Some may call songs like this "depressing" but I call them cathartic.. Brilliant lyrics.. It takes a real genius or near genius to convey such complex emotions into real words that everyone can understand.. Turn summer trees to bones and ice, turn insect songs against the night, with words we build and words we break.. He had me with the opening line.. In an industrial, grimy, blue collar town it can be hard for an artistic type to find their niche.. Doug found his ever so briefly and tragically didn't get to drink the wine after stomping the grapes.. I'm not down on his bandmates, I would think A&M records and the suits were the ones behind Doug's firing and subsequent exile and the others were left with little say. I have no inside info on that, so I give them the benefit of the doubt.. As Jack London said "I'd rather be ashes than dust! I would rather my spark burn out in a brilliant blaze." Doug Hopkins was a superb meteor that only comes along once in a great while, then disappears into the night sky. I'm still a big fan of the Gin Blossoms and hopefully they appreciate Doug's great contribution to the band and may he rest in peace.. |
