R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics 3 years ago
I was scrolling throuh quora to find mental health advice, and this song gave me connotations to one of societies main issues, depression and one of its main factors: Social Media. I'm 14 and have struggled with depression but only really since i came into yr9, the yr in which i started using social media a lot more. Its a very real problem and this song IMO at least relates to it when M.Stipe sings

Oh, life is bigger
It's bigger
Than you and you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no, I've said too much
I set it up

This relates to SM and D because in my eyes its someone with these problems trying tell themselves that they are bigger than this even though social media is as large as the world and then telling themselves 'I set it up' because they joined the loop.

Consider this
Consider this
The hint of the century
Consider this
The slip that brought me
To my knees, failed
What if all these fantasies
Come flailing around?
Now I've said too much

That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no, I've said too much
I haven't said enough

This verse and the chorus personally has the most SM referancng before SM existed. in the verse 'all the fantasies that come flailing around' makes me think of all the social media representation and how it makes people fantasise about there perfect lives, constantly comparing and tweeking there personalities and lives to fit an image that isn't theres. This is prolonged when Stipe sings the chorus with lines such 'thats me in the corner/ thats me in the spotlight/ losing my religion/trying to keep up with you/and i dont know if i can do it'. The thats me... section i see as someone who is confining themseleves as someone who has to always be in the spotlight and intern is losing the religion that is there personality and/or personality in society. This is prolonged with words such as 'trying to keep up with you/and i dont know if i can do it'. This to me refers to the general population trying to keep with all the new trends, stay in sync, keep up with the rest of them, trying not to lose there religion.

It's had a profound effect on me as i've only thougt of this in the 1/2 hour since the thought came to my mind. It is also an unbelievable song.

*Just a quick note, all the celebrities and 'influencers' on social media i am not saying have bad intentions i just think that for the most part they are inadvertadley contributiin to an ever growing problem.
