I believe this song is all about thinking about a person "so much smarter than his friends" and so he forces himself to behave with that person "come clean in jokes. integrity and tennis shoes. waiting thinking only how'd i like to be caught waiting." He has idealized the person" i've been inventing you and i continue inventing you. " he has even fantasized about being together "rehearsing disasters and forecasting all your needs." But something went wrong "i danced early then got shy and had to go home early. the mirage will fade as it unfolded. the plot's defamed its own voltage." the potential between the two seemed to be not so much in the end I think he believes to have some sort of bounding anyway "a promise implied can't be broken."
