I had a phone chat with Daniel Ash, in 1986, and I asked him what the lyrics of ‘Slender Fungus’ were about. Danny laughed, and said that the lyrics are total nonsense, and a result of him and and the other band members getting together in the recording studio and drinking lots. Danny told me that there isn’t any meaning behind the lyrics, it’s total nonsense, and written by a bunch of guys who had had far too much too drink |

I’m sure this song is about a soldier in WWI, or WWII, who believes he will die soon, and his only escape from the reality of the war is when he’s on leave from the front lines, and gets back to relative safety for a while, and visits a prostitute, who he’s fallen in love with. She’s his only escape from the horror of war, and he wishes she was his lover…the sex isn’t important, it’s the pleasure of being with another human being who is gentle that is. However, he knows that even though he’s tried to form a relationship with her that’s non-sexual, and there are other things to think about in life (“I tried to tell her about Marx and Engels, God and Angels…”), he knows that she’s not interested in him in any way other than him paying for sex. He knows that there are dozens of other soldiers, on leave from the front lines, who are waiting their turn to have sex with the woman he loves (“Her lovers queued up in the hallway, I heard them scratching at the door…”), and that’s so sad for him to know, because he wants to be her only one. When he goes back to the front lines, and knows that he’s going to have to fight his way through razor wire on the battlefield, he is going to die; but in his mind, there will be ‘flowers on the razor wire’…HER!! |
