My mother, God rest her soul, was the soloist for the Ford Motor Company choir back in the late 50's, early 60's and could bring a grown man to tears with her beautiful voice. Her choice of music at home wasn't Peggy Lee, Della Reese, or Patsy Cline. It was Elvis. I was 5 years old when Elvis cut this song (1956), and knew every word by 6. Figuratively speaking, she played this LP until the vinyl grooves wore out.

Who knows where Bernie's head was at when writing this song. It's clearly a song about New York City, but I love the melody of the song and the way he tributes other people in, "I thank the Lord there's people out there like you....
