I have quite a different reaction to this track and i'm surprised its not more common. A lot of Morrissey / Smiths songs and generally (sweetly) sad and beautifully depressing but I feel this is the one that isn't and its being looked at from the wrong angle. For me this is a song of unexpected hope or the promise of a chance of happiness from a place unexpected. I feel 2 friends are sitting in a car, Probably both depressives or at least darkly humour (so British...). The girl (I guess) makes a joke about lonely people or something that would bring the conversation that way. The speaker take offence (secretly as not to break his depressive demeanour). I guess there is a lot of things unsaid between them, But a realisation hits him in this moment, that this girl makes light of the lonely from the point of view that they, together are not. Probably a girl he likes but hasn't told fully yet or was even sure it his feeling were shared but now he just got the possible confirmation and his heart flutters as his world turns around him. This could be it, this is the chance "I've seen this happen in other people's lives" I can't hear this song any other way. Maybe they're parked up in a 'Darken underpass... (Incidentally something really bittersweet must of happened to Morrissey in a car...) |
