Kelly Clarkson – People Like Us Lyrics 3 years ago
This song definitely encourages bravery and strength and I feel like it's meant to give hope to people who are different from the rest of society. As somebody who is transgender, this song really spoke to me. I've always felt like an outcast or like I should feel ashamed about the way I am. So I'll be basing my interpretation of the song on my experience as a transgendered person.

"We come into this world unknown
But know that we are not alone
They try and knock us down
But change is coming, it's our time now"

We're born the way we're born and we're helpless to change that. People might hold a strong opinion against you and may even try to attack you for who you are. The song is reminding you aren't alone in the struggle, that there are many like you facing very similar issues. It's also saying that you have the ability to make a change for the better by standing proud of yourself.

"Hey, everybody loses it
Everybody wants to throw it all away sometimes
And hey, yeah I know what you're going through
Don't let it get the best of you, you'll make it out alive"

Others' hatred can cut deep into your emotions. Sometimes so much so that it can be difficult to want to keep going forward. She's saying that you shouldn't allow their view of your differences drive you to giving up. Things will get better when you pick yourself up.

"Oh, people like us we've gotta stick together
Keep your head up, nothing lasts forever
Here's to the damned to the lost and forgotten
It's hard to get high when you're living on the bottom"

We should stick out for one another. A little kindness goes a long way. That dark place you may find yourself in will brighten up one day. The part where she sings "Here's to the damned" directly spoke to me. Coming out of the closet back in 2015 garnered some pretty interesting responses. I've been told that I'm damned to hell by my grandmother for thinking that I'm not the gender I've been born with.

"Oh, woah-oh-oh, woah-oh
We are all misfits living in a world on fire
Oh, woah-oh-oh, woah-oh
Sing it for the people like us, the people like us"

We're people who are different in a world that expects you to fit a certain mold.

"Hey, this is not a funeral
It's a revolution, after all your tears have turned to rage
Just wait, everything will be okay
Even when you're feeling like it's going down in flames"

Many tragedies have occurred in the face of adversity. Some people may find that they just can't fight against the hatred towards them anymore and think suicide is the only option to stop hurting. And obviously suicide is a terrible outcome; there will definitely be tears. But after you've stopped crying and questioned why this funeral had to happen at all, you'll be angered at the answer, maybe enough to stand for a cause.

"They can't do nothing to you, they can't do nothing to me
This is the life that we choose, this is the life that we bleed
So throw your fists in the air, come out, come out if you dare
Tonight we're gonna change forever"

Once your mind is made up and you've got your feet planted firmly on the ground standing for what you believe in, nobody is going stop you. I didn't choose to be a different gender than the gender I've been born with, but I chose to accept it and let others know. I didn't allow them to stop me from being me. It's so deeply rooted into myself that it's who I am, in other words, this is the life that I bleed. I think this part of the song is encouraging us to just be ourselves, to fight for who we are (which in my opinion is ridiculous. Nobody should have to fight to be themselves.)

And yeah, that's my take on the song as a transgendered individual. Thank you for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day. ^^
