I'm pretty sure that's supposed to be "raft date" instead of "rat date"
Also, when I first bought the album (sometime in the 80s) I always thought the lyric was "it's justified when you walk away" which I thought was pretty deep. |

@[Motown1:44816] I've always understood the first line to be "you're sending me tulips". That's what it also reads in the Singing Dictionary |

| The English Beat – End Of The Party Lyrics

I believe it's about a guy who's crushing on a woman. He wants to talk with her alone and confess his love, but she's too busy socializing to talk with him now. She wants to wait until the party has wound down, but he's worried that by then the timing will be wrong. |

I believe the waves are being used as a metaphor for stress, and the actual drowning being overwhelmed by it, so much so that by the last verse the primary source of stress is yourself as you take your own life. |

Pretty sure this one's about the nuclear arms race of the 80s. Dream Home in New Zealand I think refers to the idea that whatever you manage to achieve throughout your life it's meaningless if others use technology to destroy the Earth. |

I'm pretty sure this is about tabloid newspapers and the pervasiveness of media in our lives. We get distracted and lose focus on our own lives. |

This song is about a guy who sees a stunning girl at a club or party and wants to talk/flirt with her, but his low self esteem makes him think she's out of his league, hence "Too nice to talk to". |

I think this one is about someone struggling with mental health issues. She sees how she acts almost as if she's another person, and it's upsetting to her the way she's behaving. She gets angry for no reason, sees harmful things when there aren't any, etc.
When the song shifts in tone, I think "you ruined all my memories" is her looking back at her behavior over the years and realizing that she isn't the person she thought she was. "I want to catch the falling babies" and the lines directly after probably refer to childbirth and some of the good times she's had in prior relationships.
The second part, "a guy's asking questions about me" and the rest likely refer to the lack of control she feels she has over her behavior. The imagery reminds one of a skier who has lost control and doesn't know how to stop with that tree approaching fast. |

@[bulgie:42183] I don't know if it still exists, but at the time the song was written, Mayfair was an English lads magazine featuring beautiful women in a state of undress. |
