The way that almost every line includes “I hate you” in the middle is a brilliant reveal of the heart of the one speaking. What physicality might be getting one by, even though it is needed, is realized to be not all one needs and desires. The person realizes that because of this, the described relationship is a trap, but can’t see a way to find a fulfilling relationship. Without hope, the speaker decides to take whatever he can get for the moment. However, there is a door left open to hope in the fact that the speaker knows “this is not my heart” and will keep seeking for that which is. |

A woman sees the greatness in a certain man, and she is genuinely in love with him and earnestly wants him to know and respond. That can be heard in the way the lyrics are sung. She not only sees how she can bring light into his life, but sees that he could do the same for her, if he loves her too. But in these lyrics she doesn’t seem to know whether he loves her, or if he takes what she is saying seriously. It is rather that she is rehearsing in her mind what she could say to him when the opportunity arrives. It’s wisdom to understand that “Life’s short / It slips on by”, and to give all you have to love and be loved. The song gives voice to those of us who find themselves in it, either the one singing, or the one being addressed. |
