How come there is only 5 comments here? Is it because of the relative lack of famousness of Glen Hansard? Is it because noone is interested in this type of singer-songwriter stuff? How does this work? People help me out. Because this could be hands down the best song ever. In terms of intensity, buildup, raw emotion and message. Period. There, I've said it. |

| Bon Iver – Flume Lyrics | 3 years ago |

This is a song I have played time and time again. It is wonderful but at the same time very, very eery. Bon Iver does that with their carefully chosen sounds and ticks and break ups in the rhythm. I have always wondered what this is about. My interpretation is that it definitely is about a loss. Some people here say it is about the loss of a girl friend but to me it is about the loss of his mother. 'I am my mother's only son" - this is the first line of the song and it sets the context. "I wear my garment so it shows" - a way of saying that in this song he will not hide himself but will show what it is he is wearing (figuratively) and tell you what it is about. "I am my mother on the wall" - mother is not there anymore, she is a picture on the wall. "Sky is womb and she's the moon" - If a person dies some people say to their children that he or she now is a star in the sky. Because the mother is not here anymore, she is floating in the sky now, like the moon. And the sky becomes his mother, his (new) womb. The dualism in the song refers to the fact that on the one hand it is ok ("it's enough" and mother is still "with us all" on the wall and always there like the moon) but on the other hand he is extremely injured by the loss. Only (the loss of) love is all maroon (like the dried blood). He feels like a shot bird with "gluey feathers" and all that he can do is swim in the flume, all day, injured, "lapping lakes", "shore to shore", "nothing's more". If you think differently, that ok, that's the beauty of music. There is something in it for everyone. But to me it is this. I can relate to this song. I lost my mother. |
