| Haddaway – What Is Love? Lyrics | 3 years ago |

Whether it is “Lady” or “Baby”, to me this song is about a man I can easily relate with. It is about a man who is in love with a woman who is a narcissist/sociopath. Such a woman is incapable of giving love or sympathy and will use any and all means to keep control/power over their victims. Skipping through the lyrics: “What is love?” Constant abuse and inconsistent “love” from her makes the man question himself on what he knows to be love. “Oh baby, don't hurt me Don't hurt me No more” Begging for the abuse to stop. “No, I don't know why you're not fair I give you my love, but you don't care So what is right and what is wrong? Gimme a sign” With a narcissist nothing is ever fair and eventually the narcissistic supply from the victim will not be enough. The victim will feel like nothing they do is right and the narcissist will make it known they are never wrong. “Oh, I don't know, what can I do? What else can I say? It's up to you I know we're one, just me and you I can't go on” The victim constantly concedes control as nothing they say is given value and they are love bombed into believing the relationship is more than it really is (“I know we’re one”.) The cycle of abuse and questioning their own sanity would make even the strongest feel they “… can’t go on” “I want no other, no other lover This is our life, our time If we are together, I need you forever Is it love?” The narcissist projects their act(s) of cheating onto the victim causing the victim to plead that there is no other and will never be. With the relationship being taken hostage as a regular tactic the victim doesn’t know where they stand. Through the daily abuse and love bombing a trauma bond is formed disguised as an insatiable desire to be together forever. Or I could be wrong. The toxic relationship I described, though, was real. |
