one of my fave goo songs! :) my version is that it's about a failing marraige or relationship (yes, RELATIONSHIP) where the other person is probably cheating around, maybe gone for days at a time (gone away/who knows where you've been?', 'hey whatcha do to me/would you come back to me?') , and the singer is left alone and unsure whether it's really a relationship anymore because his partner has been messing around so long. ('you're my sweet charade' could be saying she's nothing more than a pretend love anymore, and the entire bridge ('can you feel it/i didn't mean it...' bit) voices his frustration). yet he is unwilling to leave and puts up with everything she does ('yeah i ain't messing with another life') because he's probably still in love with her, but doesn't know what to do about it (you know i'm lost/hiding in your bed/no i don't think it's wrong/it's just gone to my head'). i always get kind of sad just thinking about what being in a sort of one-sided relationship like that must be like... oh well. thoughts? |

hey, these are a couple points of what this song means to me... i think what it's trying to say is that sometimes people are capable of so much but never get the chance to follow their dreams because they get no chance and the world makes them give up('and i wonder where these dreams go/when the world gets in your way'). also, sometimes people can totally pass up life because they were never presented with the opportunities ('and the least they ever gave you/was the most you ever knew'), so maybe they don't even know themselves that they're letting their life go by (what's the point in all this screaming/you're not listening anyway'). i often think of aspiring musicians or poets or something like that when i hear this song because it is so hard to make it in those fields so most give up and do something they do not enjoy. long and short, beautiful song (even more beautiful to play), i almost cried when i heard this for the first time. :') |
