I always think of this as Waits' most Dylanesque song. Rich in imagery and the kind of lyric that can drive you mad trying to interpret it until you realise that the meaning is the imagery itself. As a broad sweep however this song is about rumour. This guy's been away to war. He's come back (or has he?) but no-one can say for sure what had happened to him so various stories spread. Possibly the narrator is the character in question choosing to live a low profile, unremarkable life after his tour of duty and regarding all the rumours with a detached amusement |
