Bob Dylan – Love Minus Zero/No Limit Lyrics 3 years ago
I think the 'love' in this song is an actual woman seen as an ideal, not by him, but by Western society in general -- wise but silent, non-judgmental, faithful beyond question, unflappable in a crisis. But then, in the last verse he points out that her apparent perfection is a flaw in itself. She has opted out of societal constructs and chosen to be an observer rather than a participant. She has essentially divorced herself from the passion of life and thereby crippled her ability to fly.

Leonard Cohen – Came So Far for Beauty Lyrics 3 years ago
@Hack&Slash
You say, "Her name is Wisdom", but the title is 'I came so far for Beauty'. Just substitute 'Beauty' for 'she' in each line. He did all this trying to achieve beauty, to possess beauty, to impress beauty, but beauty doesn't care because beauty alone has no substance.

Bruce Springsteen – The Price You Pay Lyrics 3 years ago
@[shyanni:41994] Just another bit on this theme -- the 'little girl with the pretty little baby' represents the 'promised land', left behind, unachievable because it is behind and the drive is always onward. He's telling her not to expect the baby's father to come back, even if he wanted to, even if she is his 'promised land'.

Bruce Springsteen – The Price You Pay Lyrics 3 years ago
This song always makes me think of motorcycle gangs, 'knights of the road'. In a car you 'drive', but on a bike, you both drive and 'ride' the open highway. I think this song is a tribute to all the mavericks, explorers and loners who left home and family behind, who pioneered the roads so they could go farther, always restless, always searching for something indefinable, never satisfied to tie down and stay, knowing all along that there's a price to pay for freedom. And that price is in never knowing the quiet contentment of living in your personal promised land.
