Based on when this was released I assume it’s not just about non-conformity, but also a commentary on the commercialization of the alternative music genre during the early 90’s. There was a fear, (which did come to fruition) that the college and alternative movement would go mainstream and gobbled up by corporate radio. That is exactly what happened to Los Angeles’s KROQ. The irony is, L7 joined the ranks of other alternative acts that made the alternative genre into a household name. I’m not necessarily criticizing the band for that, as musicians have to make a living. According to L7’s song, perhaps decades later we’re all zombies. Pretending to be dead didn’t stop anything. |
