"Spore,” a heartfelt highlight of Prophet bears a substantive core: “I like the idea of someone refusing to feel lonely, despite how utterly alone they might actually be,” Knopf explains. “It’s a form of rebellion.”

Funny that everyone assumes this is about misfit kids being bullied as kids/teens. \n\nThe "we are dead before we run out of time" (indicating they die early/not at old age) and the title Horror Show could possibly point to a real-life tragedy or oppression that ended in deaths. It could be anything like a genocide or serial killing that took part somewhere in the world and the song is written from the survivors\' POV. \n\n"They make fools of us together but we always think of them" makes me think of having *privilege* and this could be any form of privilege, where they always consider the oppressors through social pressure or basic morals but the ones at top feel privileged to do as they please to whoever. They then tell them they\'re sick and alone: wealthy white people expected their caregivers to be poor and often black or poc so even though they mock the oppressed people on bottom/misfits they somehow also require them to cater to their emotional and physical needs. \n\nThe way the story evolves seems to indicate it eventually goes beyond what is forgiveable like kids at school torturing some misfit kids. It might end in a series of murders. I feel like "them" are groups that are demographic in nature and are doing more large scale oppression rather than just on the schoolyard (although not necessarily) "They cross the line" "We can\'t rewind" and "now that everything is different/We don\'t like to see their eyes cause they will never look the same" indicates to me that something happened that was beyond the pale of what could be forgiven for ex murders, making them almost inhuman in the eyes of the narrator group. \n\nThese two groups were clearly still cohabitating the same space in that from time to time they would still see each other..making me think it\'s a large scale tragedy cuz otherwise the oppressed kids would be likely to just leave the town/neighborhood.\n\nJust an idea |
