At the end of the day, this is a blues song. A phenomenal blues song. Here goes: Sacrifice = Love. It’s Biblical. Falling for the temptation of cheating is easy. There’s no sacrifice involved in doing so, and no love is found doing so. Leaving after discovering an affair is also easy. Staying is hard. A true commitment is hard. “It’s no sacrifice” to leave. All it leads to is “two hearts living in two separate worlds” (this is the blues element). “Sacrifice” is just a simple word, but the act of sacrificing temptation, (and then after discovering an affair, your pride, your legitimate pain, etc.) for a greater good, if warranted, is a demonstration of true love. It’s hard to do- but nothing that is truly and deeply good comes from something that’s truly easy. This is what the protagonist in the song is singing about. He’s singing the blues… |

| The simple word is “sacrifice”.\nTaking the easy way out, giving into to temptation, walking away from problems? It’s no sacrifice at all. True love requires sacrifice. It’s one of the oldest messages in the world. Love is a verb, not a magical state of being. \nInstead of a straightforward love song lyric, Bernie Taupin created something much deeper, thanks to years of perspective. The verse beautifully describes the problems and challenges of long term relationships - and the consequences of taking the easy route when things go wrong. The chorus provides the lesson to avoid that pain - or the message from someone who has lived through it (as Bernie Taupin had at the time the song was written). Elton is essentially singing the blues when he says “It’s no sacrifice at all”. It’s a “coulda, should, woulda” lament. Absolutely brilliant! | |
