A Flock of Seagulls – Nightmares Lyrics 6 months ago
I've read somewhere that Mike has said in an interview this was inspired by the movie that was based on the book Mommie Dearest. If you don't know it, it's about an actrice who wanted to have children but had seven miscarriages. So she and her then partner adopt children, who she ends up abusing through her visions of discipline. When her contract with the film studio gets terminated, she in a fit of rage destroys her garden. She also writes the adopted children out of her will in the end.

The song seems to contain a lot of elements from this. The whole 'you keep quiet when you should be talking' verse for example shows this sense of misplaced discipline and the fear in the children of their new mother. As the child in this song gets older, any form of comfort it has gets dismantled and it essentially shows the betrayal of trust it had towards its mother. Hence the way the chorus in the outro gets shorter and shorter, just ending in a simple pleading 'Mama?'

Heartbreaking.

The Alan Parsons Project – Dora Lyrics 8 months ago
Contrary to impraiseoffolly, i think this is a marvelous song. It gives some background into Freud and Dora, a patient of his, whose real name was Ida Bauer. Freud told her she had hysteria and forced his opinions regarding her condition on her, without taking her own words into consideration and how she replied. She ended up terminating her sessions with him because of this, leading to Freud being self-critical. That's what this song is about.

The Alan Parsons Project – The Eagle Will Rise Again Lyrics 1 year ago
I think this song is another sort of lament upon the civilization of ancient Egypt being lost. We see a short reference to this in What Goes Up already with the lyric 'if all things must fall, why build a pyramid at all' and 'if all things must pass, even a miracle won't last'. This civilization went by and has its traces largely removed or become hidden. To me, that's what this song is about.

The Eagle Will Rise Again is about realising this and re-discovery. As sure as the eagle will learn to fly and rise again (take flight?) in the morning, as sure as that we would stumble upon traces of this ancient civilization. Upon their findings, their buildings and their culture, in more than one form.

This is what the whole seeds thing is about. You sow something, but the plant won't last forever. First your effort will seem in vain, only for the plant to grow and show its fruit or flower. But it will pass away. It will vanish upon the land, like the seed once sown.

The Teardrop Explodes – Treason Lyrics 1 year ago
Read multiple times that Julian Cope apparently used to do a lot of LSD in the days of Teardrop Explodes. Maybe it's about that? Is what you're seeing real, or your mind betraying you as an effect of the drugs?

Ultravox – Serenade Lyrics 1 year ago
Nothing Masonic about this from what i can tell. The fact the singles had Masonic symbols on them doesn't mean there's immediately meaning of that all over the place. Visuals and music don't always line-up, just look at music videos from the 80s and you'll notice that. Example: Safety Dance has nothing to do with spanking dwarfs in a medieval celebration.

I think it's more so a celebration of power, unity and sound. A message resounding through music. I noticed that the Quartet album has a lot of a feeling of a band being more aware of their position in the musical world. Hymn about selling your soul for success for example. Reap The Wild Wind about taking your chance and seeing where the ship strands on the shore. The sort of alienation, possibly from your audience, in Mine For Life. Interesting concept.

Cardiacs – Is this the Life Lyrics 1 year ago
I always saw this song as someone looking for a purpose but not finding it. They're trying to find social contact, but end up being shut in: calling themselves on their own phone. Despite putting care into planning their day carefully with attention and hope, it never quite feels purposeful. This isn't just confirmed in the second verse, but also in the line later on where Tim sings: 'looking so hard for a cause and i don't care what it is'. On top of that, this person also doesn't really understand why this is happening to them. Why they feel isolated, why they feel so out of place and purposeless. That's why they never really saw.

Killing Joke – Jana Lyrics 1 year ago
It's quite an obvious shout here really, but Jana tested positive on something. Something being a disease that's gonna kill her. Might be HIV like kijima theorized, but as the song never specifies it, there's more options too.

And then there's the bit with the letter and in the second verse her breaking down and crying a few times. Maybe she can no longer get treatment because she waited so long to check out the results and so her own hesitance meant her illness winning?

I mean, it's been said already, but after reading the wonderful appreciation someone left here for others, i figured i should add my own comment just in case after 14 years they read it and get annoyed again.

Motörhead – Dead Men Tell No Tales Lyrics 1 year ago
Motorhead and especially Lemmy were... well, let's say experienced, regarding drug usage for sure. Interestingly enough, Lemmy especially was always vocal against the usage of drugs from what i've seen. This song is advocates against heroin usage. Heroin is also known as smack. Take the warning, if you die from an overdose, you'll be a dead man. And dead men tell no tales.

Supergrass – Rush Hour Soul Lyrics 3 years ago
Could be about feeling like shit\'s about to hit the fun, knowing full damn well that it\'s not good and it\'ll hurt, but just trying to distract yourself from it. He can\'t ignore it when it comes, but still he\'s trying to make himself feel good and shift his thoughts away...\n\nYeah, not my best shot probably, but i took it

Gay Dad – Black Ghost Lyrics 3 years ago
It seems to me that this song describes a low point in your life. The German sample in the intro translates to "because black ghosts, we all have them at some point in our life" and i think that sums up the song pretty well.\n\nThe black ghosts have gotten ahold of the main character of this song here and he describes trying to get rid of them, but they always come back to haunt him. The things he\'s done and regrets, the way it always gets the best of him... Yeah, i\'m pretty sure that\'s what the song is about.\n\nHe wants to get rid of the black ghosts, wanting to be free of them, but there\'s something of this sort of darkness within him and all of us, according to the song. It\'s not easy to get rid of. I think in the end he succeeds though, as on the album the song effortlessly transitions into the far more upbeat sounding To Earth With Love. A spark of hope within the sadness.
