| Danzig – Son of The Morning Star Lyrics | 3 years ago |
| Lucifer is indeed often named after and associated with Venus, the morning star, but this exact phrase "Son of the Morning Star" is also the title of a book published exactly 10 years before the release of this song, about General Custer\'s last stand. The book was made into a mini-series that aired 3 years before the release of this song. Danzig names A LOT of songs after movies, books, TV, etc, so while I haven\'t found any confirmation of this, it seems plausible that the book/miniseries partially inspired the title of this song. And of course, the name of the book may have struck him as interesting in the first place because of the association with Lucifer. General Custer\'s cultural mythos is not unlike Lucifer\'s cultural mythos, and Danzig\'s cultural mythos. General Custer risked becoming a cultural scapegoat synonymous with blundering, poor judgement, stupidity, cruelty, unskillfulness, etc etc, if it weren\'t for his being perceived through the loving and artful gaze of his wife Libby who was almost entirely responsible for transforming his public image into one of complex but ultimately inspiring valiance through her books and campaigning. But, unlike many other rewritten and mythologized cultural figures, Libby did not seem to lie or distort his genuinely deplorable side in order to create a lovable image of him. I can\'t help but see the parallel with Danzig as a public figure (not him as a private person, because who knows). A lot of people see Danzig as a representation of assholery, pettiness, insecurity, lowbrow edginess, etc etc, yet his fans are able to see something much different and genuinely, deeply, inspiring while at the same time seeing exactly the same flaws everyone else does and making no excuses for them. Danzig fans often have the best memes and the most wide ranging yet affectionate insults for the man. The parallel between those two cultural mythologies and Lucifer\'s needs no elaboration. I\'ll let you finish it.\n I also can\'t find an easily accessible explanation as to WHY the Custer book is named what it is, I guess I\'ll just have to read it. I did find that Custer\'s Venus sign was in Libra and the first house of his natal chart, and I wouldn\'t be surprised if his life and life story had plenty of morning star synchronicities. I can\'t find any information about whether or not Danzig named this song after the General Custer media or if he consumed it or what he thought about it. I\'d love to know though. \nI think it\'s his most beautiful song. | |
