Quite surprised to see that most people don't know this was written by George Harrison for Patti Boyd. He was strongly attracted to her but was with someone else at the time. Patti is the face that launched a thousand pop classics. Well, not quite a thousand, but lots. Thank you, Patti. |

| The Mamas & the Papas – Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon) Lyrics

This song is so great, my favourite of The Mamas & The Papa’s. I was interested to see the comment about this seeming to be almost two separate songs, I’ve always felt that too. It has a superficial meaning of the difference between NY & CA, the usual NY is dirty, rude, uncaring etc and the golden state is friendly and laid back (so strange to feel so friendly). The girls coming to the (laurel) canyon are apparently groupies or hippy “free love” types who partied at night and were seen walking home in the morning.\n\nBut I think the deeper meaning is that John, was finding himself attracted to much younger girls as he got older (not unusual). “I can no longer keep my blinds drawn” is superficially the change from the NY paranoia and need for privacy and not getting involved in other people’s business, to the openness and freedom of sunny LA, but also the deeper meaning of his attraction to these young girls is becoming stronger and he can no longer hide it, or hide from it. It sounds as though he is feeling liberated and ready to be part of this free love society at last, instead of being stuck in a marriage to a woman who cheats.\n\nThe stopped clock I think represents the decay and careless neglect in NY, but also his stagnating career and mental health. \n\nHe did suffer from depression and I think the whole cloudy waters/shattered fragments verse describes depression very well. Maybe you have to have had depression yourself to realise it. \n\nObviously that’s just my opinion. Whether it’s right or wrong, it’s a brilliant and fascinating song. And somewhat eerie to think the Manson family girls probably knew this song, it’s not too far fetched to think they may have had it in their minds, or even sang it, as they walked up Cielo Drive. |
