Muse – Madness Lyrics 3 months ago
It seems to be about a guy trying to determine if the intense emotions he feels with his girlfriend are a result of a healthy love, or some sort of psychological phenomenon based on some attachment or trauma issues. So is it love or is it madness? At one point he says he realizes what you mean (maybe what she told him finally sunk in). Was that about a dream-like expectation she was hoping for in their relationship? At another point, he realizes what you need. At the end, he realizes that instead of either or, their relationship is both love AND madness, and he needs it because it feels like home, so “come to me and trust in your dream and rescue me” from the mundane. I realize I can be stubborn and wrong, but he wants to continue on.

Ray LaMontagne – Winter Birds Lyrics 1 year ago
A woman lost her husband and so far, has not opened up to this new man who wants to be in her life. She needs help as her farm is failing and has a field that has not been plowed. She has a crippled cow and a leaning fence, but this has a 2nd meaning. The fence could signify her keeping him out. The new guy is hanging around like a fox under the kitchen floor. He is like a cat on the prowl crying out “I am, I am” essentially here for you. He is the sprightly chickadee who is hanging around the tree. Gone is the willow wren-her late husband. She is the tree. However, she is still grieving her deceased husband. The stream cannot contain withering rain- her tears. The kettle sings its tortured song - she is crying. He is explaining she will not need to forget about her husband as the memories will remain. He is explaining that loss is a part of life and nature. The leaves turn from green, to gold then brown could mean the grieving process before feeding the ground, which is acceptance. The trees lose their leaves, but new leaves come along, while the trees make no sound and it is best to adopt this way of nature of being open to the new, after losing the old. Being sad is normal but after finishing the natural grieving process, she should open to him. He has gathered his money to buy her a gown and bring her to the county fair to cheer her up. A yellow flower signifies affection and cheering someone up.

System of a Down – Chop Suey! Lyrics 2 years ago
My interpretation may be a little bit of a stretch, but it seems that Chop Suey was a new recipe when Chinese immigrants came to the USA in the late 1800’s, where they had to mix things together to make the food more palatable to the Americans. This song seems to be pointing out some of the discrepancies in the Bible. Actually different texts had different stories. Some differences were big, while others were small, but certain texts were rejected, while others were selected and mixed together by the Council of Nicaea, much like a chop suey recipe to make it more palatable to the masses who had very different interpretations prior to that.

Grab a brush and put a little makeup. This could mean covering things up or even just making things up.

Hide the scars to fade away the shake up. Again, certain texts were rejected and cut out, but modern Christians look at the Bible as the inerrant word of God, but humans chose what to include and exclude so we don’t see the scars or parts cut out and we don’t see how things were mixed together or shaken up.

Why’d you leave the keys on the table- could mean the parts that were rejected by the council.

Self-righteous suicide could mean that while God is all powerful and can make any rules he wants, he chose to die to save humanity from their sins. Which seems that he wanted to show how pure and selfless he was and how sinful mankind was. This is his rules, not ours.

Some contradictions in the Bible are - why would angels deserve to die if they were created perfectly by God. Also, there’s a contradiction when Jesus in one book says Father, into your hands I commend my spirit, while in another book, Jesus says Father, why have you forsaken me? I know there can be many interpretations, but the point for me, is how seriously people take these stories when they chopped up and thrown together in ways we don’t fully understand.

Ray LaMontagne – As Black as Blood Is Blue Lyrics 3 years ago
This song has some mystery. What comes to mind:

It could be my delusion, I would paint it in colors bold.
His music is his art which comes from within. From a feeling, whether others can understand it or not. Regardless if it is an illusion, it is a feeling that he needs to express.

Music that is all over the radio seems to come from a different place. He is willing to slip into someone elses shoes to understand what makes them tick, because he really does not understand surface level music that follows a formula or takes a paint-by-numbers approach. What is the point of self expression if you are jumping through corporate hoops to get your songs on the radio.

There is no place to go with the light of electric soul. This could be a metaphor that says the true beauty and power of music, or any other art form really, comes directly from the heart or a place that is deep within your soul.

Paul Simon – Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes Lyrics 3 years ago
Diamonds on the souls of her shoes is a metaphor of how she interacts with the world since she comes from a wealthy background. She is free from financial worries but she is physically forgotten, which means she is alone. The poor boy interacts with the world differently but he sees she is alone and has nothing to lose by approaching her. She enters his pocket with his car keys. Being empty as a pocket, I take it to mean that when she entered his life, she helped him to obtain a car. Over time she wondered if he was taking her for granted because of her generosity. The sign of the teaspoon and the wave was her offering her hand and him taking it. She wanted her to take him dancing so he slapped on after shave but they never made it that far. They both filled a need for each other and became a well to do couple , thus they both wore diamonds on the soles of their shoes. Pretty much face value for this one but many interpretations will work.

Staind – Crawl Lyrics 3 years ago
This seems to me about a codependent person who is in love with either a narcissist (beautiful) or someone who does not have a conscience. The speaker is addicted to the narcissist because deep down the codependent does not have enough self love and feels he deserves to be spit on and constantly criticized. The speaker realizes he is caught in a pattern even though this relationship has severe problems, it just feels right. Deadly vices - not a lot has changed, nothing better. The speaker is hugely frustrated because while he is strongly addicted to this heartless person he realizes it cannot work out. Everything falls apart is both an angry declaration and a hopeful statement that he will escape this pattern.

Staind – A Flat Lyrics 3 years ago
To me, this song is about a person who has struggled with self-hatred or extreme self-esteem issues having a talk with himself. He has been trying to focus on the brighter side by using positive self-talk - Trust in me and Im okay. He is doing this because of his struggles to keep himself together, but something happened and he is now falling in despair and can only see everything as negative about himself and believes everything is falling apart and that he again is not okay. This is some peoples definition of hell. His thoughts of anger and frustration of finding himself in this predicament again is dangerous and palpable.

System of a Down – Toxicity Lyrics 3 years ago
To me it means:\n\nConversion Software 7.0 (excessive updates) But we are the ones being programmed from TV news and our electronic devices.\n\nLooking at life through a hub - so quickly we are taking in media and being programmed, with each flip of the channel or click on a link.\n\nEating seeds- Again we are being programmed by media little by little like seeds that continue to grow into toxic ideas; thus we live in the toxic- city.\n\nYou, what do you own the world- this is to the powers that be- who control the media to make us conform to their world view, by showing us dysfunction and disorder, constantly on the news ( every waking moment - between sacred silence(death) and sleep) so that we will fear and fall in line.\n\nMore wood for their fire , loud neighbors ( showing the worst of humanity on the news to further implant these ideas into us) Most people you actually know are decent regardless of their politics, but the media is dividing us where we agree, so we think the worst about good people)\n\nFlashlight reveries- entertainment and distractions on our tvs and screens, so we don’t see we are headed (headlights of a truck) in a dangerous situation of viewing us vs them philosophy. Because Democracy is supposed to be about what the people want, the powers that be, are sowing seeds of of disorder, thus making life toxic and and distrustful of average people so that we cannot come together to to make positive change democratically.
