I have a deep connection with this song. I was listening to it frequently when I met my husband, and it was a non-traditional romance of kind of throwing our lots in with each other and hoping for the best (we've made it work 15 years).
The "Ferdinand" reference was special to me, as I am a huge Elliott Smith fan and loved the character. About two years ago, we rehomed a beautiful beagle called Ferdi (Ferdinand), who is very much my boy. Now that phrase has even more resonance to me, as he's my side-kick dog who sleeps by my side whilst the husband works a night shift. |

I was toddler packed up in a car with my Mum driving away, and it's always rung true to me as capturing how that moment begins to play out when you leave a marriage and house. We didn't turn back, but I hear the last verse and know if it had gone another way and Mum got overwhelmed, that "It's our secret, do not tell okay; let's just not talk about it" could have played out to paper over the cracks and save face. Grateful Mum was brave, she got support and that Elliott created this song that has helped me find some sense and comfort from the things we don’t talk about that I was too young to process, but old enough to commit to memory. |
