Most of the lines of this song scream fighting against growing old or fading away. He says from birth he goes right but controlling his age takes a toll on his brain.. meaning he can keep his physical self youthful but his mind starts to slip. We see some paranoia with the title itself "who do you think that is there?" Also the line "i only call them when i know i dont see them" seems like he's hearing voices. and cold step hypnotic also reminds me of the phrase Thorazine shuffle. Patients on serious psych meds tend to walk around like zombies. (hypnotized)
But running along the theme of the rest of the album and most of Interpols songs if not all we could say that this song leans more towards a woman driving him mad because she doesnt see (take notice of) him at all and his whole existence is basically professing his undying love for her.
<3 Interpol, always been one of my fav bands |

i realize im hella late but i have a strong feeling about the meaning of this song. i have a friend who\'s dad committed suicide and this friend has always been literally obsessed with suicide and death. For a long time he believed it was his destiny to follow in his fathers footsteps . \nevil lives in the mother fucking skin . \nur born with it and it cannot be washed away.\nofc he would blame himself for his fathers suicide and ofc there was only one price to pay for it. his own life. |
