Too many people take this song literally. Sure, it's about Louis the whatever. But it's really a metaphor of the writer losing his woman. When he had her, he was on top of the world. Nothing could stop him. His life was built on that joy. But now it's gone and he's got no one, no girl, no friends, nothing.
If this was just a history of King Louis, there would not be this line: "Now in the morning, I sleep alone". Self explanatory and nothing to do with King Louie. Or this line: "For some reason, I can't explain; Once you'd gone, there was never, never an honest word". He's alone now... the old friends (all hers?) just dodge him with lies about why they can't hang with him or help him.
I'd further guess the he hung out with her and her friends. He was someone because he was with someone very attractive or famous or both. Regardless, without her, he's on his own. His life was built on pillars of salt or sand... he just didn't realize that his happiness was this fragile and all layered on his relationship. |

@[donutbandit:45224] I don't Steely Dan was being that deep as to bury a metaphor about the music industry inside this song. It's about a girl - like most SD songs. Fagen's disappointments with women. |

It's a one-night stand and she's OK with that. Her spontaneous idea. She just wants a kind word and a touch in the morning before he leaves. So it remains something cherished and worthwhile; not something cheap and discarded. |

Please people, grab a clue. This is about a guy who uses drugs. His family believes he's going off to work each day, but he's going off do drugs and wade through the day. When he comes down he realizes who he really is.
Read to the lyrics: "'Til touch down brings me round again to find; I'm not the man they think I am at home' Oh no no no, I'm a rocket man.Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone "I'm NOT the man they think I am at home. I'm a rocket man". |

Listen to the song, people! You\'re missing it. He\'s not in love with her despite what she says at the end. \n\nChuck is a guy she used to hang with, frequently. They weren\'t dating. But she figured they were about to, any day now, because "clearly" Chuck wanted her. He\'d start it up soon. Chuck\'s her guy. She\'s sure. \n\nBut then Chuck starts dating someone. Not her. He\'s not hanging out anymore. He\'s acting differently. And she figures she\'s lost not only a good friend she (they) liked to hang with, but the guy she fantasized she\'d be dating. The words tell you that. It\'s clear. \n\nThe final lines about "That\'s not her" ..."in love with the little girl singing this song" are just denial. Something she hopes is true. But she knows it isn\'t. |
