Ghost – Mary on a Cross Lyrics 2 years ago
Is it possible this song is referring to someone who died? \n-> "You go down just like holy Mary" ->Well, holy Mary is long dead. "Go down" could be a play on words, meant to sound like a sexual reference but really referring to a death. A play on words that is both oh-so-blasphemous and yet gets at the point, which brings us to...\n-> "Mary on a cross" -> Only one thing happens to people on a cross - They die. A possible reference to someone who the writer found saintly in life but was killed unjustly\n-> "Not just another bloody Mary" -> Clearly pointing out again that the writer is comparing the individual in question to Mary the so-called saint. As a person who grew up with a catholic family, I know that Mary is pretty much every catholic girls\' first name, though they will go by one of their other given names, especially if you go back a few years. So if you said, "Not just another Mary", you could be saying "Not just another girl". If you said "Not just another bloody Mary", you could be saying not just another dead girl. \n->"If you choose to run away with me etc" Could be saying that had this person chosen to follow the writer, he would have seduced them, but that would be preferable to the alternative, which was that they died. A plausible scenario would be that the writer asked the person to stick around rather than get in a car with a drunk driver, have some sex and call it a night, but the person chose to go with the drunk and got killed in an accident. Could be that the person had a very good reason to go with the drunk, could be that the person just had a lot of good reasons not to stick with the writer. \nCould be that RiverStyxGhoul is 100% correct, I don\'t know the history of the band. But I think this is a reasonable interpretation and honestly, it\'s what I hear when I listen to this song. If taken the way I have presented it, it is full of the darkest of humour and most blasphemous of metaphors which is exactly what I would expect from Ghost. Anyone out there who has some insight please respond!
