| Townes Van Zandt – Fare Thee Well, Miss Carousel Lyrics | 3 years ago |
| There are some very fanciful suggestions on this page, perhaps one of them is correct. However, I was told by someone who was involved in the Houston music scene at the time, that the song was written about a falling out between Townes or one of the other young singer/songwriters, and Mama Carrick who ran the club called Sand Mountain. Mrs. (or Miss) Carrick tried to keep the place alcohol-free and teen-friendly and supposedly tried to help & encourage the young talent. Someone deemed her "Mama" Carrick because of her motherly concern for them. Well, I don\'t know who was responsible for the rift, but it\'s hard to imagine either Townes or Jerry Jeff abstaining from alcohol during a performance. Anyway, I was told that the end result was that at least one of the performers was invited to stay away. Obviously them, Miss Carousel would be Mama Carrick. Studying the lyrics, it makes much more sense to me. | |
