| It’s an open letter to the devil. Steven and John were both on a dark path, but John had a ‘home’ and a support network that let him move his life journey towards a more positive direction. Steven was a kid John knew in childhood who had a series of traumatic events and misfortune. John befriended him for a time, but eventually their paths forked away from each other. John is expressing self imposed guilt for not staying by Steven’s side and helping him escape the devil’s grasp. John is asking the devil if Steven was ever able to break free, because he doesn’t know what became of Steven. Side note: after the song was released, Steven and he reconnected after all those years. | |
