Seems like every song written near the Vietnam era is interpreted as a war song. I agree there are theories that support these interpretations and it may be so worh this song. But this song is also a metaphor for life as seen through a chess game. Retreat, be unselfish, don't surround yourself with yourself. But also be on the offense with those who insist on being your enemy. Make the enemy run so fast they don't have time to make you one of them. Fantastic words and music. Yes is such an intellectual band. Jon Anderson is a huge talent. |

Clearly the man is sad and tired of fighting. This was during the Vietnam War so is it a protest song of sorts? Medlocke, being a Native American, loves nature and peace. Beautiful song. I would love to hear him explain it! |
