Long regarded as one of the great one-shot-wonders, “Drivers Seat” by Sniff ’n’ the Tears may also be the most sinister pop song ever to chart. It is about a serial killer who picks up women at discos, offers to drive them home, then takes their lives. Notably it was released in 1978, not long after the infamous “Son of Sam” murders. That real-life murderer had the same motive. \n\nIn the song dancing is a metaphor for stalking, and driving is the modus operandi. The unnamed man whom the song is about knows what he is doing is wrong. His victims, like Jenny, are innocent and don’t deserve their fate. Yet he can’t help himself. The world is bad and it affects him. He sees no good side to people like she does. No redemption, no elite. The memory of his victims haunt him, but does not deter him. Perversely, it drives him to further violence. Being in control, in the driver’s seat, is the only thing in his life. The day after his crime he moves on, dancing and driving. |
