| First things first - these lyrics are incomplete. A verse is missing after "Hurry, love and we\'ll be off! (etc.)" and a verse to a verse and a half after "All them boys is full of corn! (etc.)." C.f. http://www.fresnostate.edu/folklore/ballads/Wins245.html - the song apparently derives from a minstrel song circa 1880. The Kingston Trio has successfully made a joyful little number free of any racism in their version. I got their "Goin\' Places" LP in the very early 1960s, and this is one of the songs that sometimes still pops happily into my head. | |
