| I really love this song; and I can\'t believe there are no comments here already! \n\nAnywho, I\'m pretty sure her partner went out to sea and their ship got wrecked; so they were unable to return. Now she\'s trying to deal with the loss of her love the best way that she can to no avail. She\'s constantly thinking about them and having dreams about what might\'ve happened to them. So, it\'s pretty simple; but still one of my favs by them. :D | |

So, I highly doubt that either of these interpretations are accurate; but I still thought it would be fun to kind of post them anyways. I'm not the best at explaining things; but I hope you guys can get something out of it regardless :D)) So, my first ( and more personal) nterpretation of it is: I pretty much think it's about the idolization of the perfect self. Like, someone who has essentially created the perfect version of themselves in their head; and they've put that person up on a pedestal so much that it's become extremely self-destructive. Like, for example, in anorexia, there's always this image in your head of what you'll look like once you've reached your goal. You almost, quite literally, worship that version of yourself in a way. Even though you understand that it's hurting you; but your goal is so important to you that you don't even care. It's like being in an abusive relationship with yourself, y'know? For my second interpretation, I still think it's about idolization. Moreso in a real and existing abusive relationship. The woman he's singing about is incredibly toxic; but he's so infatuated with her that it doesn't even matter to him. He has this image in his head of what he wishes she would be; and continues to cling to hope that one day she might become that person. Unfortunately, she never will. He's just tossing pennies into wells at this point. |
