Jimmy Finn is a Character from Mark Twain’s "Life on the Mississippi", Chapter 56. He’s the town drunkard of low social status. One day, he borrows matches from the protagonist. Hours later, he is locked up in a small jail, that catches fire, killing Jimmy. The protagonist then ponders if his actions lead to Jimmy’s death. "The world’s turned upside down" "Jimmy Finn is out" could mean that the song talks about a world in which we take care of the people in need. The "whiskey sodden tramp" got out of jail, and didn't burn to death. To me, it's a song about second chances, the judicial system and taking care of the weak in our society. |
