@[miguelbgood:52198] Cowboy boots or men's fashion boots of the era (some known as Beatle Boots) both have high (for guys) heels.
In college 50+ years ago, I had a dormie suggest to me that the song was about the Mafia drug trade, because of the boots, silenced gun, and dealers buying fancy cars with your money. |

@[Haygurl:50662] To me, "putting your business on the street" implies that the girl is prattling to anybody and everybody about all the money her rich boyfriend is spending on her, like he's some kind of trophy. She's a blabbermouth who doesn't have the sense or the loyalty to keep the private aspects of their relationship private. Telling her besty, her sister, you have to expect that, But when you're flashing it everywhere, you're nothing but a gold digger. |

@[DCEngineer:38975] "I thought that the song was perhaps reflective of the Steely Dan groups life style. My wife says, "Obviously!". I don't know if they were into drugs."
I watched a documentary about Steely Dan some years ago, where one of their long-time backup singers explains that pretty much every song the Dan ever wrote was either about sex or drugs, period.
This is a band that put out two songs about pedophilia (Everyone's Gone to the Movies, Janie Runaway) and one about incest (Cousin Dupree), so you need to take these things where you find them. |

@[stuart1000:38974] I have always heard this as "stare at your Technicolor horror movie." It actually makes sense if you're talking about LSD, and I'd have to look back at the liner notes to see if that is in fact what it actually said. |

I was interested to hear the popular interpretation that the "white men on the streets" were coke dealers. I always assumed they were plainclothes narcs preparing to raid the Kid, leading to his frantic abandonment of his digs and his paranoia about whether the people down the hall knew who he was. |
