I'm guessing by the comments here that I'm a little older than most of you. But I was a teenager when Tommy James came out with this, and we all (everyone I knew from 12 to 18) that this was about sex. Nothing but sex. I have no idea what Tiffany might have thought, but interviews with threes Shondells make it plain that they knew how it was taken, and had a chuckle at the idea that they were slipping one over on the very restrictive censors of the day by making a song about teen sex. In fact, the lyric "children behave" was particularly titillating to the band because, beyond a certain age, parents don't talk to older teens that way, and parents of that time didn't let teens of that age run off into the dark together. So the clear implication (and the intent of the band) was that this was about very young, maybe even preteen, sex. "Tumbling to the ground" and feeling your hearts beating against one another is not consistent with an innocent childish kiss, and having "to hide what we're doing" is a long way from innocence. |
