Innuendo- mid 16th century (as an adverb in the sense ‘that is to say, to wit’, used in legal documents to introduce an explanation): Latin, ‘by nodding at, by pointing to’, ablative gerund of innuere, from in- ‘towards’ + nuere ‘to nod’. The noun dates from the late 17th century. an allusive or oblique remark or hint, typically a suggestive or disparaging one. We live in a world that forces us to live on the borderlands of innuendo. Always have and always will. From the beginning of time. From the beginning of society we have had to balance our need to live our most authentic selves and societal demands of conformity. Freddie knew that more than most living in the outside of most societal standards. Of a race not considered the correct race, a religion not Christian ( the acceptable religion), not the heterosexual (the acceptable sexuality), Freddie oftentimes was forced to speak and live in innuendo. But Freddie made a different choice than most of us do. He became on of the bright stars that shine throughout history, as people who confront the norm. One of those that choose authenticity. Living out who they truly are. Inventing and Re-Inventing themselves as they grow and change. But there is for them a balancing act on the fine line of offensiveness and authenticity. These people choose live on that line. I believe Freddie is speaking to future bright stars here.. in Innuendo… Inviting them to live authentically because he believed (and so do I) that those who live authentically challenge society to grow and change for the better. Society as it stands has a way of limiting our vision of stagnating of suffocating creativity and even suffocating itself. It seeks to homogenize. Without someone willing to challenge its norm no one can see what living life to the fullest potential looks like. And society desperately needs to see what that looks like. It needs to be challenged in order to break free of that stagnation even as it resists that change. Here is to all us Innuendo Tightrope walkers! |
