James Taylor – Never Die Young Lyrics 4 years ago
there are some interesting interpretations of 'Never Die Young' here - and I would probably be better off not to add my own thoughts -
( wouldn't it be cool to hear what JT was thinking when he wrote it ! )

One thought i do have, is ( I believe ) sometimes a songwriter will use a word Because it fits the tune though it's meaning may not Be the songwriter's meaning
( I think of Garth's use of 'ex-Marine' Because he needed a prefix, and acknowledged in the notes ( for his father ) that there are not (ex-Marines) ) -

also, I will offer this disclaimer : I am a Very literal person. I often seek to use a third or a fourth meaning of a word, But my interpretation is very literal.
part of my purpose for including this disclaimer is very early in this song, JT uses the pronoun 'they' and several of the authors (above) believe that refers to a couple or couples...
it may, but I have a different thought -

'we were ring around the rosy children ,
they were circles around the sun... '

I remember 'ring-around-the-rosy' as being a children's yard game... And
I remember looking up at adults standing with the sun at their backs, there heads being circular silhouettes in the sun(light). . .

so much of the rest of the song -to me- speaks of a journey through life - kind of a hybrid of the ideas expressed by eduardo and JohnWind above -

for some of us, our youth is spent admiring others - for whatever we admire about them ( they ) and perceive as our own shortcomings
( to me, the singer ( but not necessarily the songwriter, or the listener ) is referring to 'they' in not-specific terms - they are others, maybe singular, maybe a couple, maybe, broadly, others. )

so to me, the song speaks to a journey through life...

two more thoughts -
prey. look for definition three or definition four -
' the dust and the rust and the... that preys and claims us all... '
I don't consider the use of 'prey' in this context to be in any way 'predatory' ;
Time marches on, and eventually Everything ages.

everything ages --

I was going to comment to the idea of immortality that a couple of the authors have included above, But I don't think that is appropriate for a guy link me -
If by immortality, one is meaning invulnerable or feeling-indestructible, okay.
beyond that, I consider immortality to be a matter of faith and personal belief - and I respect yours.

Never die young is certainly a resonant phase -
I consider 'Never Die Young' to be a thoughtful song !

JT is part of the soundtrack of my Life, and
I am grateful for that !

play On ! !! skiJ
