| Natalie Merchant – I May Know The Word Lyrics | 3 years ago |
| I see this as an appropriate and haunting song for what’s happening in the world today. Many know what’s right and what’s so far out of whack, but will still stand there in indifference because they can’t let go of the dogma doctrine they’ve prescribed to for fear of being called out by the small group of “high priestess’s” that will cancel them for it. We are all (aside from a radical few) much closer in our beliefs and knowledge of what is right and wrong, but will sit in silence and in fear of the sword wielded by the evil that take every opportunity to tear down those who speak what we all know to be sane and true. We see others being berated and torn down and know we should reach out and say, I’m with you but fear that through that understanding and association, you will also become another victim to the forked tongues of those whose aim is to destroy our society. Instead we convince ourselves we’re being compassionate and understanding, all the while wallowing in denial and saying, "it’s such a grey area". We know the right thing to do, but instead choose self-preservation. It’s a true struggle. Be strong. Always be compassionate, but always be true to what you know to be right and just. No matter the consequences. Be someone you’d be proud of. | |

Growing up in an abusive household I relate to a lot of the lyrics in this song. It has a definitive feeling of hoplessness which is common among abused kids. "There's a squeak hinge down on the back gate It lets us know if he comes around I don't sleep that good anyway If you've never heard the silence, it's a God awful sound" It's the anticipation of an abusive parent coming home, waiting to hear that squeak and not being able to sleep knowing it's coming. "So please hand me the bottle, I think I'm lonely now And please give me direction, I think the hurt set in I just caved in And I don't feel nothing" Being battered physically , mentally or both makes you numb. It is a defense mechanism to ward off pain. Then to feel again you turn to alchohol or other substances for that sensation of feeling. And wanting direction is wanting someone to tell you how to make it stop. "Don't much get down to the avenue I could drive, but it takes so much to get there" This is about blocking out the pain of the past. "Don't get off on all the broken glass, The Cadillac scene, well I've seen a lot of good things die and I'm In an over emotional way" This is about not wanting to confront and deal with what you've experienced because facing it feels as difficult as living through it. That's my take of the song. It has a very deep and personal meaing to me and the angst in Rob's voice just personify's that feeling. |
