"The Butcher Says.. Ellison, of course. If you let me out on my own in that condition, what do you think is going to happen? Butcher and Twilight Zone collide on the streets of Hollywood, resulting in ongoing art-misery attack and some deeply aquamarine guitar from that nice Peter Astor. Source: Unconditional liner notes "Jefy Is Five" is one of a number of Harlan Ellison story-titles that litter the lyrics to the song that bears his name. Like: "Time's A-Wastin'" "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" "A Boy And His Dog" "Alone Against Tomorrow" It's what I call a T-Rex Letter. You know, where fans of a group write a letter about that group, quoting all their song titles? One of those. In an introduction to one of his collections, Mr. Ellison writes that he tells these stories to tell people that "You Are Not Alone"... because we're ALL IN THE SHIT TOGETHER! What a dude! (He does, incidentally, keep his number in the L.A. phone book. That line is true. So, I should warn you, is the one about his not suffering fools. He is an impatient man, and should not be approached for quotable quotes on the subject of the JBC by those who could do without being told to... uh... go someplace else. "I like songs about drifters, books about the same They both seem to make me feel a little less insane Walked on off to another spot I still haven't gotten anywhere that I want Did I want love? Did I need to know? Why does it always feel like I'm caught in an undertow? The moths beat themselves to death against the lights Adding their breeze to the summer nights Outside water like air was gray I didn't know what I had that day Walk a little farther to another plan You said that you did, but you didn't understand I know that starting over's not what life's about But my thoughts were so loud I couldn't hear my mouth My thoughts were so loud, I couldn't hear my mouth My thoughts were so loud, ah" My sister (RIP) said this song reminded her of me. Never knowing exactly where I wanted or needed to be, kind of drifting but feeling okay with it. If you go back and look at lyrics from MM other albums, a lot of their songs are about traveling and not being sure where he wants to end up. "My thoughts were so loud I couldn't hear my mouth." Racing thoughts, constantly. "Well I float on, maybe would you understand? Gonna float on, maybe would you understand? Well I float on, maybe would you understand?" I've had people in my life not understand that I'm okay with where I'm at at the moment, or maybe I'll take a little more time and explore what I want. Maybe he's saying the same. I'm going to float on, maybe would you understand? I love that my sister thought of me when she heard this song. Because for her it was about excepting me as who I am and all I am. I feel this song has a bit of that in it. Feeling lost, but being okay with that. |

| The Beatles – I'm So Tired Lyrics | 4 years ago |
| @[rabidpenguin:37379] This is 18 years later, but maybe the mumbling at the end is him finally losing it, or falling asleep just enough to try and say what he needs to say, but then is startled awake again because he can't sleep. I have insomnia and that happens to me. | |
