sherylmac is correct. She wrote this song when she was writing with Alfred Johnson, which was some time before the making of the album, possibly before she had even met Waits, and certainly before their split. But that doesn't stop it being a tremendously resonant 'lost-love' lyric. As usual, her imagery is remarkable: searching through space, through time to find some sort of reconciliation. And we can pretend it's about Waits. I would put good money on it that , when she sings it now, she thinks of him, just a little... |
