I think this is an uplifting song. He starts where he is in the grips of drugs: Crush a bit, little bit Roll it up, take a hit Feeling lit, feeling right Two AM, summer night, I don't care Hand on the wheel Driving drunk I'm doing my thang Rolling the Midwest side and out Living my life, getting our dreams People told me slow my roll I'm screaming out, "Fuck that" I'ma do just what I want Looking ahead no turning back If I fall if I die Know I lived it to the fullest If I fall if I die Know I lived and missed some bullets Doing drugs, it feels exactly as above, exhilaration and fun, then he realises: Then he explains how shit it is to be on drugs aka the side effects: Tell me what you know about dreamin', dreamin' You don't really know about nothin', nothin' Tell me what you know about them night terrors every night Five AM cold sweats, waking up to the sky Tell me what you know about dreams, dreams Tell me what you know about night terrors, nothin' You don't really care about the trials of tomorrow Rather lay awake in the bed full of sorrow Everyone that has experimented with cocaine can attest that it keeps you awake at night: Then he explains his awakening and recovery: I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know Everything that shine ain't always gonna be gold, hey I'll be fine once I get it, yeah, I'll be good What he means here, is that even drugs seem like an amazing idea initially, it is a bad idea in the long term. And once you "'get it" which means understands that it's not all that great, you will be good. I find this uplifting because to me it is a song of a person trapped in the short term fun of alcohol and drug use, then they realise how shit it is to not be able to sleep and do "roof patrol" and be sad and regretful at the same time. Then he sings about "the pursuit of happiness" where your realise that something shiny is not gold (drugs are shit) then you are good and you can overcome it and make the road to recovery. This is how I interpret it and this song came to me in a very difficult time in my life and helped me to overcome drug use. |
