i LOVE THIS SONG! Sometimes the dream/ideal vision before us robs us of living life in the present. And the reality of the present is that it is fleeting. Time, life, age, death come to all of us... A tragedy with this life is that we get caught up in dreams vs. living life and the people around us instead of waiting for an ideal life/wife/picture of what our life could be. Nothing stops the river as it flows by... |

I think this song is about heaven. Each verse tells a story of a person named Karen (or anyone close that we've lost) whom he remembers and cries about... the second verse speaks about his own realization that he, too, is dying... the third verse is about his actual death - he's going, going... gone to Carolina in his mind. The fourth verse is kind of a stinging indictment of religion as he's surrounded by a holy host of God's chosen - but he's still on the dark side of the moon and feels that he can't be around these folks forever so he excuses himself and up and goes to Carolina in his mind. I've never been to Carolina, but I'm sure it evokes longings for home, sweet memories, sunshine, moonshine... his ideal vision of heaven as a place like home... to the one's that he's lost, and in his own dying - he's longing for a heaven he calls Carolina... that's at least how this song speaks to me. |
