| The song is about a man who wants to be careful and stable while be bold and adventurous at the same time. He had to choose because you can't be both: "...you just can't have it all." It turns out he chose the former. You can help but feel he's missed out on some opportunities but in the end his decision is validated. "He'll never make any enemies" because he played it safe and took the back seat. It's unthreatening. Unlike people that take chances and become successful. Success breeds contempt. The change of verses from: "you just can't have it all" to "...you just don't need it all" confirm this. He may not of become a WINNER (perhaps he's not self-centered enough) but what he has become is respectful, reliable and loyal. If this makes him a loser he is certainly a BEAUTIFUL one!!! | |
