Hole – Burn Black Lyrics 4 years ago
I think this song is about having a traumatic event, such as a miscarriage, and the person, the culpable male, either doesn\'t understand the significance of that or does not care about the woman as deeply as she thought he did, nor care about the relationship as much as she was putting herself into it. It\'s a rude lesson in the nature of trust and the ability of a sexual relationship to go very sour as soon as it\'s tested by the elements. It\'s also an interesting song about how death transforms the life, the feeling, the soul within the traumatized person. In other songs, a change of color often represents being touched by a trauma that stigmatizes or awakens a change of view, and often carries a very deep hurt as a reminder. I love how awake this song feels, and how challenging of the norms the status quo. Obviously the relationship ended because the man wasn\'t a real man, but a coward who fled and made guilty the survivor, whose perspective the song is coming from.

The Mars Volta – With Twilight As My Guide Lyrics 4 years ago
Lately, I have been getting into this music more, probably because of the 2017 album. What I notice throughout all of the music that Cedric sang in, is that the songwriting captures some very heavy and dark human emotions and observations. Cedric is probably the most "feminist" singer I have ever stumbled upon in the music of "my generation" (I use quotes because it is more like, the music my generation consumes - he is GenX, closer to Kurt Cobain's generation, than to my own emo-kid, millennial gen... but anyway...) I began liking this music at age 17, when I would not have really had an appreciation for human suffering and especially, the suffering we do give our future-selves. I kind of filter Cedric's Mars Volta work through my own life events. My interpretation of his songs is more porous, I guess because of having lived through my own issues that develop huge feelings. The subliminal writing is anything but nonsensical - but of course, to emo kids of the early 2000s, who were used to lyrics simply spelling out every feeling and observation in the most frank, literal sense, then yes it does seem that way. I have not revisited, or caught up with, most of the music from my teen/college years in over a decade, and lo and behold, there is a ton of amazing music that simply melts my heart. I cannot express my views about the song meanings without kind of projecting more than I am comfortable. I will say that in adulthood, there are a few types of pain - only a few that stand out as significant enough to weave into any long-term, contemplative work-out process. And more fascinatingly, most of us will have experienced terrible trauma and grief and tragedy - music like this is first for the artist, and then followed by anyone it speaks to, directly or indirectly. The song offers something I have not heard in the early Mars Volta, and that is the total lightness feeling that something has been restored from a higher act of consciousness and acceptance. That tiny part of the song, sounds like a masterpiece. I am unsure WHY some people do not care for this album and how everyone sticks with the early albums as the favorites. Those were amazing but I love the softer quality of this music.

The Mars Volta – Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of) Lyrics 4 years ago
I just feel like this song is about something very personal and sort of confusing and tragic, but I am not willing to venture to say whether it is some sort of metaphor or based on reality or anything.

When I hear this song it makes me cry. I know it is like, a song that had some vibe-y performances and dancing on stage, but, I just think about the song performed live in the early 2000s, how it would sort of give way to a long segue where it was improv, and it seemed very, very heavy, and my thought is this song was a therapeutic means to an end for the artist.

At the Drive-In – Governed by Contagions Lyrics 4 years ago
I am thinking this song is about some very deeply-felt convictions against the morality police, particularly, how its policing does not protect women's bodies from harm, and the less-privileged take the brunt of the suffering. I think it hits an eco-feminist chord and is about how, with all the rape and disease, suffering, war, death and depletion, starvation in the world, why would we not give women the bodily autonomy that allows them to overcome and protect themselves, and by extension, the future generations and our planet? -- This is not a line-by-line interpretation, rather I am familiar with the theme in punk music for the support of women's autonomy and that is just the impression I am getting. Please let me know if this is not an accurate interpretation because I would be really curious to know an alternative meaning.

Modest Mouse – Ocean Breathes Salty Lyrics 4 years ago
I think this song is about how religion can lead people to fall asleep on their very own lives, the lives that they say are so precious and worth an eternity, and yet they do nothing but look forward to the better things supposedly to to come. If you believe in an afterlife, then act like it! Gather as much truth and meaning from this life as you can carry ("the ocean": our relationships and friendships, values, life lessons, loves; "breathes salty": is rich with all the stuff it has to offer, and whatever we judge or make of it, matters) or else your dependency on the afterlife will be vain and fictitious, no matter how ardent the belief is. "Get away from me": the obsessions of the moral majority, are not of service to humanity and true spiritual growth. Spirituality depends on how we associate with life, and an afterlife presumes there is, or was, a life, a living embodiment, that has somehow gotten into the future. It is a deep and questioning song, pure poetry.
