The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus – Pen & Paper Lyrics 4 years ago
@[FFSPPL:36886] " you like the way that people stare at you now", 'now' does imply a change. conditions change which reveal a new characteristic about a person. one that the band did not like. whoever it is about, the band is calling them a sell out. a big FU

@[FFSPPL:36884] "until your on your knees" you may be able to do whatever you want, but you might have to suffer first, you have to let go of giving a damn what other people think, which is difficult, not rewarding usually at first, probably later.

No one did this quite right yet so here it goes:

Minor chords suggest pensivity.

first line " this whole routine is getting old" hes not saying its necessarily 100% good or bad, but he is wearing out. whatever it is, it is not rejuvenating.

"were getting old" more to suggest he is not 100% confident either way, but hes worried that he has to come to some conclusion in the future, he can not remain inconclusive forever, hes wearing out. "my reputation lets me know" " a reputation is something other people think about you. "i can do whatever i want" other people think he will just do whatever he wants, so he question whether he should just do it anyway if thats what they already think.. or atleast thats the sarcastic joke, taking it as sarcasm, hes saying that his reputation is innaccurate, hes sayin that the arguments in that direction are very transparent, predictable, repetitious, stale, tiring, etc. then he address the main statement, ' can you actually do whatever you want to do? maybe that it is possible yes you can. but, in order to do so, you must not be motivated by insecurity, later in the song he says sheep are all the same. sheep lie to themselves. deep down they know they are sheep. insecurity leads to arrogance, trying to impose on other to rethink your reputation. narcissist are actually insecure. They try to act big because inside they feel small. he could try to over correct his reputation by acting differently to impress the narcissist, but why change when he would he rather be himself? Obviously not, but how long should he stay talking to the sheep who are acting out of insecurity trying to impress other people? i already written more that i want so that probably is enough for you to figure out the rest of the song. basically when do you have to stop trying to help someone and just let them experience the folly of their own actions, can you even ever stop one from experiencing consequences of their actions even if you love them? its a pretty deep message that gets lost a bit in the simple power chords someday some one should cover this song with a bigger ensemble would be a massive hit

@[FFSPPL:36650] sorry for the 3 comments im pretty drunk rn. anyway. The best DJS saving the slowest song for last means that no matter what things work out in the end. the kids are rushing for adventure to get out of their small down, they want the big city discotec, but in the end they will fall back on the slow song and the true love. theres a cycle. theyre slow now, they want the fast, then when they do find true love they go back to the slow. it is a genius song. doesnt get the same views as the pop hits obviously, you have to think about it.

@[FFSPPL:36649] It doesnt have to be boy/girl love it can be any kind of youthful love towards a hobby or artform. the point is, the young people are being forced to "grow up = work" whether its skateboard, photography, dance, band, etc... the song about how the society equates growing up to "working" rather than loving.

Jimmy Eat World – Work Lyrics 4 years ago
Young repressed and innocent lovers are being destroyed by the pressure to "grow up" aka get a job 'work' and become a boring bland f__k. 9-5 'worker'. Both lovers know they can have exciting adventures together, they can also get out of their small town and explore the big wide world (which might bring them more compatible lovers, divisions, the end of their youthful innocence etc) . They both know that they are immature and make a ton of mistakes, They are in youthful , flawed love. They know that to entire society is structure to destroy young love. They are torn between the desire to grow up and move on with the fact that the "society" defines growing up as nothing more than learning to be good at your job. The song is called work but it is about young love. Obviously growing up in this society doesnt mean learning to love better, it means getting a job, the video makes this pretty obvious. "is our last party ever before cubicle?"
